Free Comic Book Day 2017

Saturday May 6th, 2017

Check out all the great titles that will be available, and keep an eye out for even more on the big day!

(Honestly, you don’t have to, but the more people Facebook sees attending, the more people they’ll show the event to! Thank you!)

Free Comics!

We have a lot of great titles for you to pick up this year – including a small handful that you won’t find anywhere else (while supplies last).

As always, each person is limited to 5 free comics per person – or up to 10 with a purchase of $25 or more – so that we can maintain a good supply for folks who can’t make it in right away!

Creator Signing: Jeff Martin

We’re proud to once again have Jeff Martin in store for Free Comic Book Day this year. Jeff is the creative force behind books like Hockeypocalypse, Heat: The Space Age of Wrestling, Redcoats-ish and more, and he will be in store all day, signing and selling books!

Creator Signing: Chad Huculak

Creator behind the weekly Edmonton humour strip End of the Earth! Chad will be in store signing copies of the print collection of this series – a hilarious read, especially for those who love this city!

Food Truck: Preserve!

Preserve will be on hand all day to feed attendees at Free Comic Book Day. We can’t wait to see what kind of delicious wares they’re bringing!

Life-Sized TARDIS!

It’s back! Take pictures inside or around a life sized TARDIS! It may or may not be bigger on the inside. You’ll have to stop in to find out…

Tyche Books & Local Authors

Phenomenal Alberta publisher Tyche Books will be here with several of their local authors through out the day! Stay tuned for the list of authors and the times they will be at the shop!

E.C. BELL (10am-1pm)

E. C. Bell (also known as Eileen Bell) has had short fiction published in magazines and several anthologies, including the double Aurora Award winning Women of the Apocalypse and the Aurora winning “Bourbon and Eggnog.” When she’s not writing, she’s in Edmonton Alberta, living a fine life in her round house (that is in a perpetual state of renovation) with her husband, her two dogs, and her ever hungry goldfish.

Rhonda Parrish is driven by a desire to do All The Things. She founded and ran Niteblade Magazine, is an Assistant Editor at World Weaver Press and is the editor of several anthologies including, most recently, Equus, Tesseracts Twenty-one and Fire: Demons, Dragons and Djinns.

In addition, Rhonda is a writer whose work has been in publications such as Tesseracts 17: Speculating Canada from Coast to Coast and Imaginarium: The Best Canadian Speculative Writing (2012 & 2015). She also co-wrote a paranormal non-fiction title, Haunted Hospitals, with Mark Leslie.

Her website, updated weekly, is at

KRISTA D. BALL (11am-1pm)

Canadian author Krista D. Ball combines her love of the fantastical, an obsession with Jane Austen, and a history degree from Mount Allison University to bring both writers and muslin lovers a new and unique reference guide.

Krista was born and raised in Newfoundland, where she learned how to use a chainsaw, chop wood, and make raspberry jam. She lives in Alberta these days. Somehow, she’s picked up an engineer, two kids, six cats, and a very understanding corgi off ebay. Her credit card has been since taken away. You can find her causing trouble at and on twitter: @kristadb1

It won’t be there for long, but while it’s here, it should have a name!
This past Sunday, our store experienced a minor flood. We worked really hard over this week to get our store back in working condition for this weekend, but we still have a big hole in our ceiling as a result. So we thought… why not do something great with it?
So, this weekend, for a donation to Zoe’s Animal Rescue, you can take part in our NAME THE CEILING CAVE contest! Enter to win, and we’ll draw the name at the end of the day! Names should be work-safe. And if the one we pick isn’t, it’s on to the next one.
The Free Comic Book Day Mini-Con!

We’ve managed to procure the empty retail bay next to us, and will be housing some local creators who will be on site all day selling great locally produced content! Variant Edition is providing this space to creators for free to help promote great local creators. Check them out!
