This Column Has Seven Days Tag

Devin R Bruce is a friend to Variant Edition and to all good-hearted creatures who roam the Earth. In each installment of This Column Has Seven Days, Devin discusses his favourite pop culture experiences of the past week in an effort to share the joy of an overlooked gem, an old favourite that’s bubbled up to the surface, or a classic work that he’s finally gotten around to. Comic books, movies, television, novels, podcasts, music, Old Time Radio: there’s something for everyone. Here’s what he’s been up to this week. * * * * *   The biggest pop culture surprise for me in the...

So full disclosure: it's my birthday. I am old. Tonight I am looking forward to enjoying the company of some of the fantastic people that I am lucky to know and enjoying some delicious food and drink. But before then I thought I'd drop a quick column featuring a bunch of great pop culture offerings that I was fortunate to delve into lately. And then I will go get free birthday pancakes. With that plan in mind: let's go! For this week's column I have quite a few things that I want to talk and don't really want to leave any of them out. So I'm going to do quick reviews that (hopefully) get to the heart of why they've grabbed my interest, and then hop right out. Like a thief in the night, except instead of stealing people's valuables I'm leaving them wonderful treasures! (Also, I just realized that there's no antonym for "thief." A guard prevents theft but preventing crime is not the opposite of stealing.) And now that I have the linguistic oddities out of the way, here's what caught my attention...

This week's entry is going to be a bit of a short one. I'm feeling a little low on gas this week and in my downtime I've been primarily doing the emotional version of gorging myself on comfort food, i.e., watching my Blu-Ray copies of The Flash and knitting. However, even though I feel a little stuck in the mud, I did manage to find a few highlights that I thought might be of interest. Eacdh made me sit up and take notice, in their own different ways, and for that I was very grateful. Hopefully I can spread that gratitude around...

Greetings friends and neighbours! I hope that everyone has been staying weird and wonderful over the last week. And if the week has been lacking in high-quality weirdness, don't worry: I come bearing a cornucopia of delights! Well, they delighted me, anyhow. Let's get into it! * * * * * No joke: Dirty Dancing is a much better movie than I thought it was. To be fair, the first time I watched Dirty Dancing when I was ten years old, and let me just say that it is not a great movie for a ten year old boy who isn't able to...

Lately I have been consuming a lot of great pop culture offerings but for some reason I've been at a bit of a remove from most of them. This week I want to talk about the things that broke me out of my day-to-day funk and made me really feel something. Awe, happiness, shock, excitement, curiosity: these things gave me all of that and more.
